Hi all,

I thought this article was kind of interesting.  There are many other comments online about the report released two weeks ago by the IOM, but this seemed to be the most reputable source I could find.

After reading this article, I became interested in Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) – it seemed like working for a QIO would be just the thing a Health Systems Engineer could do well!  Here’s another link regarding QIOs.

Any thoughts on this?  Seems like a match for an HSyE / Public Health background to me…

Hey all,  check this out:

It’s expensive, but do you think there is value in doing something like this, or should I just wait until my employer will pay for it someday?  I’m toying with the idea of taking the one in January…

Defining health systems engineering September 6, 2006

When I tell almost anyone outside of our field that I am an Industrial Engineer, people automatically assume that one day, I will be working in a factory.  If I am more specific and say that I am a Health Systems Engineer, I get blank looks.  The problem is, though, that often times, I don’t even know how to explain what a Health Systems Engineer is.  Although many describe it as using human factors models to improve patient safety or workflow, my area of interest isn’t even hinted at in these descriptions.  Our field is a new and developing area.  In the process of this development, it is important that we develop a definition of our skills and purpose.  Without this, we risk losing the ability to describe what a Health Systems Engineer does.
